I have been considering building a traditional masonry pizza oven for years, but was deterred by the technical and materials challenges. So, for several years, I have watched the developing market in portable pizza ovens. After becoming familiar with Cru, I decided to buy a Cru 32 on a special July 4 discount. The oven was in short supply at the time. Nonetheless, it arrived promptly. UPS did an awful job, as the carton had been obviously mishandled, was crushed and torn. There was some cosmetic damage of no functional consequence. The oven quality is superb and comes with adherent plastic protection of the beautiful stainless surfaces. After the oven was completely assembled (easy to do), I noticed that the UPS damage included bending of the steel support strips at the front and rear bottom of the base - upon which the entire oven rests. Because of this, the oven did was not flat, but sat at a noticeable angle. I was able to account for this with some metal shims. From this episode, I learned that it is quite important that the base be level. Otherwise the top hood may slightly torque and may not line up properly with the base. If the base is flat and true, the hood rests properly on it and the holes (in the base) and pins (extending from the hood) line up perfectly. There is a definite learning curve in making and maintaining a proper fire. As one who keeps a supply of firewood, I was quickly able to split appropriate size pieces of the recommended size and easily start a fire. It required a fair amount of wood to raise the temperature above 600 degrees F. I cooked the first pizza at this temperature in a little over a minute and it is important to rotate the pie while cooking. Adding more wood got the temp to 850 and the second pizza cooked even faster. This, too, has a learning curve. All in all this is great fun. Next up will be bread baking with my son-in-law. We actually plan to make a day of it, centered on the oven. Pizza for lunch with the grandchildren, followed by bread baking, followed by a beef roast with potatoes. Everyone is looking forward to this! Added bonus: my grandson loves to split wood. Which brings me to customer service. This, like the oven itself, is superb. I explained the shipping problems/damage by email and received a prompt reply. Cru's representative was courteous and grateful for my input. I explained that the oven was functionally fine and I did not want to replace it. He told me that they were aware of the problem and that the packaging had been completely re-designed for all future deliveries. He offered to send me an accessory of my choice in compensation. When purchasing, I had considered the accessory set including pizza peels, but thought it expensive. Now that I have received it, I can say it is of the highest quality; well-designed, well-made of excellent materials and, like the oven itself, worth the price. All-in-all, Cru makes a high-quality product and is doing all the things customers require of a quality company. Highly recommended!
